Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has canceled Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s participation as the keynote speaker at its 2025 International Nuclear Policy Conference, Iran Nuances learned.
The decision was made following an “orchestrated pressure” campaign from “Israeli affiliated hawkish elements” and several former officials who served under the former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama administrations.
Araghchi was initially scheduled to deliver a virtual keynote address, today on Monday, at the conference, which gathers policymakers, diplomats, and nuclear experts to discuss global nuclear nonproliferation and security issues.
These groups have formed a “coalition of convenience” whose goal is to undermine or “torpedo” any potential initiatives concerning Iran undertaken by the Donald Trump administration, a source said.
FM Araghchi is currently leading Iranian indirect negotiations with the US delegation led by Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff.
While the talks showed cautious optimism for progress, opposition from hawkish factions and political actors critical of Trump’s diplomatic efforts appears to have influenced Carnegie’s reversal.
